They should have offered them parachutes & kick them out of the plane … no need to risk a plane landing. Hey if paratroopers could do it in pitch black darkness 74 years ago using WW2 technology, where a mis-landing could mean drowning in swamps/large rivers, landing in minefields, being used as target practice by enemy troops, etc I’m sure it will be a cinch with modern tech e.g. GPS-guided/laser-guided parachutes … like how modern bombs / missiles are guided to their targets.
